ARC Review: Sea

Sea by Sarah Driver

Publisher: Egmont Publishing

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.ย  This review is spoiler-free.

613vPUkf1xL._SX324_BO1,204,203,200_In the sky, the fire spirits dance and ripple. Grandma says they showed our Tribe that Iโ€™d be a captain, before I was even born.

Ever since Ma died, Mouse has looked after her little brother, Sparrow, dreaming of her destiny as captain of the Huntress. But now Daโ€™s missing, Sparrow is in danger, and a deathly cold is creeping across Trianukka . . .

Sea-churning, beast-chattering, dream-dancing, whale-riding, terrodyl-flying, world-saving adventure. The first book in a stunning new fantasy adventure trilogy, perfect for readers aged 9+ and fans of Philip Pullman, Piers Torday, Abi Elphinstone, Katherine Rundell and Frances Hardinge. *

After a great deal of thought, I decided to DNF Sea at 32%.ย  However, I do not think you should let this deter you if youโ€™re interested in the book.

I really liked the world of Sea and the concept of the trading ships and tribes.ย  The world that Driver builds is familiar, yet filled with moon sprites, shale songs, and terrordyls.ย  The characters speak with a slightly strange, but understandable dialect.ย  Fortunes are told in the sweeping aurora overhead and you can practically feel the spray of the sea on your face.

What didnโ€™t work for me were the characters.ย  The story is told from the perspective of Mouse, a young girl who is destined to follow in her grandmotherโ€™s footsteps to become the captain of the Huntress.ย  Mouse is a fierce character with a strong voice and a sense of self that reflects her way of life.ย  I think sheโ€™s a character that I would have really liked as a child, but I couldnโ€™t connect with now.ย  I donโ€™t think this is because Iโ€™m a boring adult, as Iโ€™ve loved many other characters in recent middle grade fiction.ย  I think I struggled more with her attitude.ย  Sheโ€™s stubborn and does things that are incredibly dangerous simply because she wants to.ย  This is a trait that I really donโ€™t like in any character, adult or child. ย I was surprised to discover her age — she felt much younger than her thirteen years.ย  I have to say that I was a big fan of her grandmother, who is a force to be reckoned with despite her age.

Overall, this book wasnโ€™t quite for me.ย  The lovely world building didnโ€™t make up for a slightly convoluted plot, which I donโ€™t feel I can comment much on because even at 32% not much of it was revealed, and my struggles with Mouse as a character.ย  Just because it wasnโ€™t for me doesnโ€™t mean it will not be for you.ย  Rather than recommend passing on this book, I think you should pick it up if the plot sounds appealing to you.

Rating: 3/5

    1. I think it’s a book that I’m going to pick up at some point in the future. Grandma was totally awesome, I really liked all the bits with her!

  2. This is actually really interesting, because I also DNF this initially, albeit for different reasons. I forced myself to finish, and if I’m honest I wish I hadn’t. I wish I’d loved it- it sounded so up my alley e.g. MG, fantasy, friendship and an amazing heroine, but it fell so flat.

    1. It sounded so amazing! I don’t know what it was about it, but it absolutely did not click with me. I felt horrible DNFing it because it was one of my first NetGalley copies, but it had to be done ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      2. Same! It can sometimes feel very lonely when you’re the only one of the few who didn’t like a book.

      3. I absolutely loathed one of THE most popular books of last year which is a pretty lonely opinion ๐Ÿ˜‚. Hope you don’t mind me commenting on this which is a bit older, I just found it and was interested to hear your thiughts/glad to find someone else not keen.
