It’s Friday! I’m looking forward to a weekend of sitting on my butt and doing absolutely nothing. After being out of work sick all of last week, I’ve been doing a lot of catch up work and the week has had its ups and downs. I missed my Monday post, but seem to have gotten things back in order. Anyway, here’s what this week looked like in books.
Books I read
Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody
The Diabolic by S. J. Kincaid
I was so pleasantly surprised by both of these books! First of all, Daughter of the Burning City was everything I wanted. It just worked so well for me and was so compelling. I loved everything from the setting to the mystery to the characters. A+ debut!
I really enjoyed The Diabolic. It has so many elements that shouldn’t work for me (overpowered heroine, cocky on the outside but sensitive on the inside hero, weak friend who symbolises everything good about humanity, etc.), but it all clicked together so well. I can see it being a love-it-or-hate-it book, but I’m firmly in the ‘loved it’ camp.
Reviews are forthcoming for both of these books! I’ve fallen a little behind on my reviews, but I have devised a plan to get caught up (namely not being lazy and making myself actually write them in a timely fashion).
Books I’m currently reading
At the moment, nothing really! I haven’t yet decided what my next digital ARC will be. I’m going to go through my ARC spreadsheet and figure out something that needs to be read and reviewed for September. Perhaps The Thousandth Floor (see below)?
I’ve started Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary, which you can see featured on last week’s TBR Thursday, but am only about 6 pages in so I haven’t marked it as ‘currently reading’ yet. I change my mind so often that I wait until I get stuck into a book before declaring that I’m really reading it!
I am thinking of starting The Lies of Locke Lamora after hearing so many good things yesterday!
Books I bought
Nothing! Look at me being so good. Now bear in mind that I do have a to-buy list for August and September. I might save up and go wild at the end of next month. I mean, I’ve got The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue just released in the UK and two Leigh Bardugo books coming out soon. What am I supposed to do? Be responsible and not buy more books when I have over 250 at home? Please.

I’m pleased to have been approved for both of these books! Otherworld may prove a little controversial. I know there has been some division among the bookish community on celebrities writing children’s books – which YA falls under. Otherworld was written by the actor Jason Segel in partnership with author Kirsten Miller. I know they’ve teamed up to write books previously, but I’ve not read any of them.
The Thousandth Floor was a book I was hoping to get approved for before the second book was released. Tired of waiting, I ended up buying it at YALC. I was just approved for the digital ARC yesterday! It’s funny how that works out! After getting approved for The Thousandth Floor, I saw that the sequel was up and tried my luck. I got approved for that too, so it looks like I’m going on a little binge here soon.
That’s it for this week! I’ve got my fingers crossed for some exciting book post in the near future. Meanwhile, I’ll do my best to continue reading through everything in the flat. Have a great weekend!
