Weekly Wrap-Up: 27 April 2018

It’s Friday and I’m wondering where all the warm weather from last week has gone.  Is British summer already over? Say it isn’t so!  It’s pouring rain here, which means it’s perfect reading weather at least.

What I read

Red Son by Mark Millar

City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty

The Testament of Loki by Joanne M. Harris

I read three books this week: a graphic novel and two adult fantasy books.  Red Son is one of Scottish Fiance’s TBR picks from February (me, being a terrible partner, am very slowly working through those books).  I usually find Superman incredibly boring, however he was (annoyingly) right about this one!  I ended up really enjoying this new take on Superman’s story, one in which he crashes and is raised in Ukraine rather than America.

I took to Twitter last week to ask what I should read next from my NetGalley TBR and you guys voted for City of Brass.  It turns out that you all know me very well because I absolutely loved this book.  It was such a gorgeous world and exciting story.  I’ve already written my review for this and it will be up on Monday!

The final book I read this week is one I was so excited about.  The Gospel of Loki is a book that has really stuck with me.  I loved her writing style and the way that she told the weird and wonderful tales from Norse mythology from the villain’s point of view.  I thought it would be a standalone, but she’s releasing a sequel!  I was lucky enough to snag myself a proof and I tore through it in two days.  If you liked The Gospel of Loki, I really think you’ll love The Testament of Loki as well.

Books I am currently reading

IT by Stephen King

Whistle in the Dark by Emma Healey

I’m still working on IT.  I’ll be working on IT for awhile!  I’m currently about 14 hours in — only 30 more to go!

I’ve been reading so much science fiction and fantasy lately that I felt like I needed a change of pace.  Fortunately, Whistle in the Dark showed up in my postbox at just the right time.  I’ll be chairing an event with Emma Healey soon (see below for more) and I am so thrilled!  I’m devouring this book.

Books I bought

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I preordered Sky in the Deep, which is one of my most anticipated books this year, after reading Shana from Bionic Bookworm’s fantastic review.  I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to buy it and I unsurprisingly gave in.  I can’t wait for brutal Viking goodness.
Because I can resist anything but temptation, I also threw Stalking Jack the Ripper into my virtual shopping basket. I’m really unsure about this one — I think I’m either going to absolutely love it or absolutely hate it.  But it has been haunting me for about six months so I decided to go for it.

Book post

The Testament of Loki by Joanne M. Harris

Whistle in the Dark by Emma Healey

The Half Sister by Catherine Chanter

Should You Ask Me by Marianne Kavanagh

So it was a great week for book post!  I have already read The Testament of Loki, am currently reading Whistle in the Dark, and plan to read The Half Sister next.  I need to take a closer look at Should You Ask Me, as it was unsolicited book post, but I do love a good thriller.

NetGalley Approvals

Ravencry by Ed McDonald

I am so happy to have been approved for Ed McDonald’s next book!  Blackwing was one of my favourite books of 2017. His book was one of the best debuts I read that year and I’ve got the sequel in my hands!  Ah!

Other bookish news

YALC wrapped up all of its author announcements this week and I am beyond excited.  I pulled together my YALC TBR, which consists of 17 books! I’ll be posting that TBR on my YouTube channel soon, so watch that space and don’t forget to subscribe!
I’m so happy to say that I will be chairing another book event at Blackwells in Oxford!  Come see the marvelous Catherine Chanter and Emma Healey on 9 May — tickets and information can be found here. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/catherine-chanter-and-emma-healey-in-conversation-tickets-45227837680.

On the lookout for spring.

So that’s it for this week!  What did you read this week?  Did you buy any new books?  Are you missing the sunshine and warm weather as much as me?  Let me know!

  2. Ooooh Justine Stalking Jack the RIpper is FABULOUS. It’s not as pulpy cheesy as it looks. It’s beautifully written campy Victorian gothic fun.

      1. I read both Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula last year, and I think they made my top 5-star reads of 2017 if that’s any indication. This series is everything I want in modern Victorian gothics. ❤

  4. So glad to see that you enjoyed City of Brass because that book definitely solidified itself as one of my all-time faves when I read it back in January. I think I was able to devour it in less than 48 hours.
